We made a huge step forward on Tuesday with our plans to tackle air pollution in Bath, with cabinet backing plans to introduce a Class C Clean Air Zone in the city.
We believe we have struck the right balance by exempting cars but charging higher emission buses, coaches HGV’s, LGV’s/vans, private hire vehicles and taxi’s. Our proposals will now go to the government and we’ll be asking for funding to set up the Clean Air Zone.
Thank you to everyone who gave us their feedback during the consultation, helping us to shape our plans to cut harmful pollutants and make our beautiful city clean and green for everyone.
There’s been some really positive news in Bath this week. We’re delighted to have a played a key role in bringing Bath’s city centre’s neighbourhood policing team back to the heart of the city. The council has been working with Avon and Somerset’s Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens for some time to establish a new police base in Lewis House on Manvers Street. This is a huge boost for the city and will provide much needed reassurance for residents and businesses.
Talking of boosts for the city I attended the launch of No 1 Bath Quays on Thursday. After years of planning, the start of enabling works on the site is a really exciting development. There’s a huge demand for office space in the city and this is the first new office building to be built in Bath for a generation.
Once completed, it will bring in new businesses creating fantastic job opportunities for local people.
Finally I’m really looking forward to this weekend’s Our Young Stars Awards Gala Dinner, celebrating the outstanding achievements of sixteen extraordinary young people from across Bath and North East Somerset. When I first came up with the idea of the awards last autumn I never dreamt we’d receive so many nominations. I’ve been really moved reading their stories, which include tales of triumph over adversity, examples of bravery, determination, self-sacrifice, kindness and compassion.
We have a special night planned for all the winners on Saturday and I’m sure all those attending will agree these young people are quite remarkable and wonderful role-models for their generation.
