Local businesses account for a third of Bath and North East Somerset's carbon dioxide emissions. There are excellent business opportunities for local businesses that act now to prepare for the emerging low carbon economy. The importance of business adaption to a low carbon world is highlighted in the Economic Strategy for Bath and North East Somerset 2010 - 2026 in chapter 2: Scarcity of resources; page 10.

Advice and support is available for businesses wanting to save money, save energy and reduce their environmental impact.  A list of organisations is below:

Business Link

Businesslink.gov.uk, the official government website for businesses of all sizes and providing local help for businesses in the South-West. The website offers detailed advice on issues such as complying with environmental legislation, writing an environmental policy, setting up management systems, producing environmental reports and using resources more efficiently.  Links to: Waste, environment and efficiency information. 


Carbon Trust

The Carbon Trust's business pages provide support and advice for small, medium and large businesses wanting to calculate and reduce their carbon footprint, save money and take advantage of the benefits of Green Growth.
The Carbon Trust has a Energy Efficiency Financing scheme which offers leases, loans and other financing options to all types of organisations and businesses seeking to reduce their energy use.
The Carbon Trust run a free online community network for SMEs to share knowledge, gain insight and exchange useful resources relating to the technical, behavioural and regulatory issues SMEs face when lowering their carbon footprint.  Register on the SME network.


British Gas Energy Efficiency Fund for micro-businesses

This fund is designed to help micro businesses manage their energy costs in the long-term, by providing free expert advice and energy efficiency measures.

Eligible businesses will receive a free on-site energy survey, as well as fully-funded installations of energy saving measures valued up to £6,000 per business, helping you save money on your energy bill. 

Site surveys will be carried out by trained professionals and will identify the right range of measures that can be delivered at your site – this could include new LED lighting, a boiler replacement, new insulation or other methods to control your energy use.


Manufacturing Advisory Service

The Manufacturing Advisory Service  can work with manufacturing businesses to access new markets - including low carbon goods & services, to develop or diversify products from prototype to production and improve product and process manufacture to reduce waste, improve quality, cost and delivery. 

Low Carbon South West

Bath & North East Somerset Council supports Low Carbon South West, a trade association and partnership between businesses, academia, investors, local authorities, regional and national agencies.  It is the largest low carbon technology trade association in the UK with over 2000 members.

Low Carbon South West promotes the growth of the environmental technologies and services sector and runs information and networking events to support low carbon businesses in Bath and North East Somerset and across the South West.

Regen SW

Regen SW is a leading centre of sustainable energy expertise and pioneering project delivery. Regen SW is working to enable business, local authorities, community groups and other organisations to deliver renewable energy and energy efficiency and build a prosperous low-carbon economy in the south west of England.

National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP)

NISP is all about 'Connecting Industry and Creating Opportunity' for business and in the last 7 years it has done just that; helping companies cut disposal, storage and transport costs and generating sales by adding value to previously under-used or discarded resources.   The NISP Network identifies mutually profitable links or synergies between its business members so that underutilised and under valued resources from one (materials, energy and water) are recovered and reused elsewhere in the industrial network - creating a truly CIRCULAR ECONOMY!

Green Deal

The Government’s Green Deal scheme may be able to help your company pay for energy efficiency improvements to properties you own or rent.  This means avoiding upfront costs and paying over the longer term through your electricity bill.

Making environmental claims

Defra provides guidance for business on environmental claims and labels to help business provide clear, useful and accurate information, which is fair, not misleading and genuinely reflect a benefit to the environment. Guide to Green claims and labels advice from Defra.


Commercial waste management

Reducing waste and using materials more efficiently could make your company more profitable. Waste costs money and by finding ways to reduce waste, your business could become more profitable. Use the WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) resources with help by sector on resource efficiency and waste reduction.
WRAP’s Innovation Challenge will provide fully funded specialist support to targeted UK companies to innovate business models and working processes and identify and implement commercially sustainable opportunities. Examples could include switching to more durable products, increasing reuse or leasing, rather than selling products to your customers.
