We have a number of online resources that we purchase for you to use 24 hours a day. Some of these resources are specific to library members and will require you to enter your Bath and North East Somerset library membership number for access.

Online Reference Resources

  • Dictionary of National Biography - This famous dictionary gives authoritative biographies of around 50,000 British people.

  • Oxford English Dictionary - Find out where words came from, as well as their meaning.

  • Oxford Music Online - Formerly Grove Music, this resource is a wealth of information on all types of music.

  • Oxford Art Online - Formerly Grove Art, this product has now expanded its image collection. It also contains in depth articles on art, artists and art movements.

  • Oxford Reference Online - This product allows you to access some of the best of OUP’s reference books online.

  • Who’s Who and Who Was Who – This wonderful resource provides short biographies of the all the movers and shakers in the UK.

Online Newspapers and Journals 

  • Local papers "Thisis"... news from Bath, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and surrounding areas.

  • Times Digital Archive 1785-2012 - Find any news story, obituary, birth notice and more from the Times Newspaper. This fascinating database is fully searchable. 

  • NEWSBANK - Get the latest news from around the world.  You will find articles from all the national daily papers in the UK, and many more from around the world, including the New York Times, China Daily, Washington Post and many more.  Please note that this contains only the text of the articles, and has no pictures.  Holdings go back to 1985 for some newspapers, including the Times. 

  • Directory of Open Access Journals - A directory of over 3,000 quality controlled, full text, scientific and scholarly journals covering a wide range of subjects and languages.

  • Access to Research – Free online access to over 1.5million published academic articles from the Access to Research desktop shortcut on our library computers. You can browse for articles from home, but please note you will only be able to view the journal text from a library computer.

Local and Family History Online

  • Ancestry UK - Access 1 billion searchable UK family history records through our subscription to the UK's most popular family history website. You can access our Ancestry subscription from the library computers in any Bath and North East Somerset library or from your own device on library premises. Ask staff for further details. Please note that you cannot access our Ancestry subscription from home due to the terms of licensing.

  • Archives and Local Studies Service – Local history, family history and special collections based at the Bath Record Office.

  • Bath in Time - Historic images of Bath from public and private collections.

  • Bath BMD - Provides a searchable index of local Births, Marriages and Deaths from the Bath Register Office, including details about how to order certificates.

  • History of Twerton - Find out more about the village of Twerton.

  • Free BMD - A national listing of Birth, Marriage and Death records.

  • Georgian Newspaper Project - A searchable index of Bath Chronicles from the Georgian Period.

  • Family Search - The largest free family information resource, including the International Geneaological Index (IGI).

  • National Archives - Access to what was the Public Record Office catalogue (PROCat) and the National Register of Archives.

  • Bristol Record Office – Online catalogue of holdings.
