From 2014 to 2018 events and activities will be taking place across Bath and North East Somerset to mark the centenary of the First World War.

These pages are constantly updated to provide details of how local people are commemorating the anniversary.  We are keen to hear from organisations about events and projects.  Please email details to centenary_worldwar1@bathnes.gov.uk.

Side by Side: America and World War 1

2018 marks the centenary of America's first major military action during WW1. This exhibition explores attitudes to the involvement of America in the War, and how American action helped bring an end to the stalemate.

On the centenary of the Mudros Armistice, when war in the Middle East ceased, this conference explores the (lesser known) First World War campaigns in that region.

Voices 1918: Remembrance Day

The final event in an annual series featuring readings of poetry, prose, letters and diary entries from 100 years ago.  Readings will be interspersed by musical items of the era performed by members of the Walcot State Choir.

Community of Keynsham, Keynsham Town Council and Keynsham in Bloom at St John's Church, Keynsham

Unveiling of Poppy Cascade, time TBC

Poppy Cascade unveiling

The people of Keynsham have been busy knitting poppies to create a cascade on the tower of St John's Church as the centrepiece of the town's Armistice and Remembrance commemorations.  During the week there will also be a parade through the town with local children (Friday 9 November), a World War One Songs singing event (Friday 9 November) and a trail of 51 poppies in Keynsham Memorial Park representing the 51 men from Keynsham who died in the conflict.

This special play has been written about local heroes retrunning from the battlefields of World War One.  The museum will open an hour before each performance for browsing and will remain closed for the rest of the period 4-12 November.

A composition and improvisation workshop day for string players led by Scordatura Women's Music Collective to mark the centenaries of the end of the First World War and the first votes for women.  Players will create music and play music by women composers, culminating in a performance for family and friends at 15.45.

Beacon ceremony, 18.30

Battle's Over - Beacon of Light

As part of a nationwide act of commemoration a beacon will be lit in the paddock by the village hall to mark the centenary of the Armistice.  Rev. Preb. Jan Knott will lead a ceremony at 18.30 with the lighting of he beascon at 19.00. Afterwards there will be a bring and share supper for parisioners of Marksbury, Stanton Prior and Hunstrete, with tickets bookable in advance (first come, first served).
